Inspirational Short Story: Struggle with Cancer and Kidney Failure

At the age of 20, I felt a lump on my throat. The doctors diagnosed it as an infection but later when it wouldn't go away, a biopsy was done and it was found to be a tumor. I had something called post transplant lymphoproliferative disease. It's a type of lymphoma. I had to stop school and thankfully I did not have chemo or radiation but had to stay in for daily drips. I guess I am lucky not to have gotten the other lymphomas which require chemo but I really felt at that time that whenever my life started getting back on track, something will happen to disrupt it.

I am still learning about life. How to live it in a way where even when things happen, I am still cheerful and full of smiles. People say I already am like that, but it still takes quite a bit of hard work to stay cheerful all the time. My closest friends know that I do get down quite a bit. But I think God put me in a situation where I can fully experience the whole spectrum of life, I feel very old deep down inside. But I also believe that I was put through all this for a greater purpose, to help people out there deal with life and the things it throws at you.

Throughout these experiences I learnt something very important, we have little control in our lives. Whatever or whoever is close to you can suddenly be taken away. Those that will be able to deal with this are those are are always happy with what they have, treasure very much what they already have and those who have complete faith in God. It would be good to have both.

The other thing I learnt is about the importance of family. My dad, mom and sis have provided divine support, putting up with my whims, being there for me when everyone else is busy. And they never fail to try to give my sis and I everything we wanted. They're truly angels. My bestest friends, the seven closest to me who visited me at the hospital each time, stayed over when I had dialysis and providing immense laughter and support all the time. Also the other friends who came along and changed my life in one way or another, who touched me with their sincerity and simple-mindedness, their goodwill and hugs. I love them so much.
